Project description

Prominent box-type stringer stairs at the GALILEO in Garching

First to the lecture, then a stop at the sushi bar, on to the fitness training and finally to the cinema? You can do it all at GALILEO in Garching, which was opened in 2020. In this new lifestyle centre, university, work and leisure come together. The visitors can expect a mix of different restaurants, shopping facilities, sports and leisure areas and even a church, as well as the auditorium of the Technical University of Munich, offices covering more than 12,000 m² and a hotel. With more than 25,000 people visiting GALILEO every day, this is a place that covers all the different areas of life.

Modern and clear-cut

In addition to the three storeys underground, which accommodate among others more than 500 parking lots, there are another 36,000 m² of space in the 200-metre-long and 48-metre-wide building. Interwoven L-shaped blocks of glass and concrete form terraces in the interior of the building and condense towards the ground floor. The architectural office of Nickl & Partner Architekten AG designed GALILEO to be transparent, straightforward and modern, achieving the second place in the architectural competition. Straight-lined, modern and creative are also the box stringer stairs installed by MetallArt, which span two floors. With a sophisticated handrail solution and a striking colour scheme, they are a colourful eye-catcher in the entrance area of the congress centre at the GALILEO.

Project details

Enormous span of the box-type stringer stairs

The highly qualified MetallArt assembly team welded steel treads between the double-sided, parapet-high box-type stringers. A particular challenge within the construction was to design the huge span of the box-type stringer stairs in a self-supporting way. The construction was executed according to DIN 18065 and EN1090.

Stainless steel handrail embedded in stringer recess

On the inside, about 100 mm below the top edge of the balustrade stringer, there is a recess in the stringer to provide for a handrail made of a round stainless steel tube with a diameter of 34 mm. In contrast to the parapet-high stringers, this sophisticated handrail solution, the design with open treads and the striking colour scheme give the box stringer stairs a playful and light appearance despite its solidity.

Beside the production, delivery and installation of the box-type stringer stairs MetallArt was also responsible for the verifiable structural analysis.
