Steel stairs with all-glass railings in Vienna

Ellipsoidal steel stairs

In the exclusive flagship store of Max Mara, the spiral steel staircase fascinates with its sculptural look.

Project description

Steel stairs with glass railings at Max Mara

Close to Stephansplatz in Vienna, the Italian fashion brand Max Mara opened its flagship store in a 19th century palace in the year 2016. The exclusive boutique on Vienna’s boulevard, the Graben, covers 500 square meters on two floors and presents the fashion company’s entire range. A stylish parquet floor, elaborate stucco work and an imposing steel staircase with parapet-high railings form the fascinating backdrop for high-end Italian outfits characterized by elegance and the highest quality craftsmanship.

Sophisticated staircase design for luxury boutique

The ellipsoidal steel staircase presents itself as a special design element due to its unusual shape and advances to a real eye-catcher with the special steel facing. Combined with glass railing elements and a modern handrail, the partially parapet-high box-type stringers got a striking finish. Thus, the rounded construction fits perfectly into the historic ambience of the designer store and underlines the exquisite atmosphere. The sculptural character of the steel staircase is accentuated in a thoroughly successful way by the unique choice of materials, making it an inspiring work of art.

Premium staircase architecture for steel staircase

With a 4-flight stair layout and the innovative railing solution, the steel staircase connects the two floors of the boutique. The ellipsoidal shape of the staircase is the result of the constructive approximation of 2 radii. A combination of box-type stringers, some of which are as high as the balustrade, and inserted glass fillings at different heights demonstrates state-of-the-art design as well as advanced manufacturing technologies and creates an impressive interplay of form and material. Three intermediate landings, each with an opening angle of approx. 125°, make the steel staircase pleasant to walk on. The harmoniously manufactured exit landing completes the construction on the upper floor.

Handrail design in steel on outer stringer

The rectangular handrail made of flat steel is a functional design element that complements the steel staircase. Supported by angular steel balusters, it runs along the inside of the external staircase stringer and was equipped with a cable routing on the bottom for the on-site LED lighting.

Steel cladding for a distinctive style

The effectful finish of the steel surfaces on the inside and outside of the stair stringers as well as on the steel elements of the gallery creates the characteristic appearance of the steel stairs. The facing sheets, which were provided with textured paint on site, have a thickness of approx. 2 mm and were fixed by MetallArt using a special glueing technique.

Transparent look with all glass railings

Corresponding to the elements on the stairs stringers, an elegant all-glass railing made of white glass runs along the edge of the ceiling on the upper floor. Thanks to a significantly reduced iron oxide content, white glass guarantees the greatest possible light transmission and transparency and avoids the green tint that appears with conventional glass. Using the most sophisticated assembly techniques, the glass panels were placed in the glass pocket, which was designed analogously to the stair stringers.
